Cavallo Island was formed on a granite base and remained uninhabited for thousands of years until the Romans exploited it as a resource for constructing travertine columns. Abandoned under the reign of Augustus, it remained forgotten for many centuries, feared by sailors for the hidden dangers behind its enchanting beauty.
In the 1800s, Jean Castel, a famous Parisian playboy, made Cavallo Island his retreat, where he spent much of the year in the company of his closest friends.
In the island’s crystal-clear waters, numerous archaeological remains can be found, along with schools of century-old groupers that linger among the granite formations.
